Ginger Essence & Dry Brushing
How we supported lymphatic flow and eased swelling
Lymphedema is not the same as ordinary water retention.
-
Edema: Excess water in the body, often helped by diuretics like Lasix.
-
Lymphedema: Build-up of lymphatic fluid that doesn’t respond well to diuretics.
We learned this difference the hard way.
Brad’s doctors prescribed Lasix, but it only dehydrated him — without helping the swelling. His digestive system needed hydration, and the diuretics made things worse. We wanted something gentler, something that worked with his body instead of against it.
That’s when we found ginger essence and dry brushing.
Ginger Essence
This turned out to be one of the most effective remedies we tried. Within two days of using it, Brad’s swelling reduced in a way we hadn’t seen from any medication. Even hospice nurses were surprised.
What we did:
-
Mixed 8 drops ginger essential oil with 2 tablespoons coconut oil.
-
Gently warmed the mixture.
-
Massaged it into these key lymphatic points:
-
Armpits
-
Backs of knees
-
Inner elbows
-
Groin crease (leg-meets-torso)
-
Neck and collarbone area
-
-
Avoided sensitive areas: genitals, nipples, face, mucous membranes.
⚠️ Always do a patch test when using essential oils. Avoid open skin, mucous membranes, and delicate areas.
Dry Brushing
We paired the ginger oil massage with daily dry brushing to encourage lymphatic flow. It’s a simple technique that directs fluid toward the kidneys for elimination.
Our method:
-
Start at the feet, brush upward toward ankles, knees, hips.
-
Brush from hands to wrists, wrists to elbows, elbows to shoulders.
-
Brush neck downward, then across collarbones, chest, and belly — always directing movement toward the kidneys.
-
Use a firm natural-bristle brush on dry skin before showering.
🎥 We’ve included a YouTube video on the main page that shows a great demonstration of dry brushing.
Why It Helped
The combination of ginger’s warming, stimulating properties with the mechanical action of dry brushing seemed to get Brad’s lymph moving in a way nothing else had. We can’t say it will work for everyone, but for us, it was one of the most powerful and comforting tools in our holistic care kit.
