Morning Shake
🥤 Morning Shake (Our Routine)

During Brad’s treatments, we learned how important nutrition was for maintaining strength, energy, and overall resilience. We read in several sources that some cancer patients aim for higher protein intake — sometimes up to 100 grams per day — to help the body recover, including rebuilding white blood cells.
This morning shake became a daily staple. It was simple, nutrient-rich, and gave Brad a strong start toward his daily nutrition goals.
💡 Prep First: Clean Ingredients Matter
Because chemo can leave the immune system more vulnerable, we took extra precautions:
-
Used Trader Joe’s Veggie Wash to rinse fruit and eggs thoroughly
-
Rinsed the knife after cutting each ingredient to avoid cross-contamination (we did the same when prepping green drinks)
-
Used our NutriBullet blender for quick, single-serve portions that were easy to prep and travel with
🥣 Our Go-To Ingredients
-
~8 fl oz Unsweetened Coconut Milk — Healthy saturated fats; we chose the lowest sugar/carb version we could find (Trader Joe’s was our favorite)
-
(Optional) 3 Organic Eggs — About 6g protein each
Note: Always consult your doctor before consuming raw eggs, as some people may be at risk for bacterial infection.
-
Garden of Life Organic Vegan Vanilla Protein Powder — 22g protein and just 2g carbs per scoop; we liked the clean ingredient list and low sugar profile
-
~4 oz Pomegranate or Super Berry Juice — For flavor and antioxidants
We share more thoughts on pomegranate and carrots in the Trojan Horse section
-
Nuts & Seeds — 1 tbsp almond meal + small handful of walnuts (lower in carbs than many other nuts) for extra protein and healthy fats without added sugar
🍓 Bonus Add-Ins
Sometimes we mixed in ingredients from our dessert recipes for extra nutrients — or saved them for later so Brad didn’t feel overloaded.
By the time he headed out the door, Brad often had close to 60 grams of protein, while keeping sugars and carbs minimal. On lighter mornings, he’d follow up with a small snack, like a slice of bacon or sausage and a few berries.
