Blog: How to Get Alkaline — Our Personal Approach

⚠️ Disclaimer: The following is a personal experience shared for informational and storytelling purposes only. It is not intended as medical advice. Always consult with a qualified healthcare provider before making any changes to your diet or health routine.

Here’s something simple we did during Brad’s healing journey — and honestly, it’s something I still do today.

The Power of Lemon Water 🍋

Every morning and evening, we’d cut a fresh lemon in half and squeeze it into a glass of water. That’s it. Half a lemon, twice a day.

Now, you might be thinking — but wait, aren’t lemons acidic?

Yes, technically they are. But once digested, lemon juice has an alkalizing effect on the body. The pH of lemon juice is around 3.5, while stomach acid is much lower — around 1.5 to 2. So comparatively, the lemon helps to raise the body's internal pH slightly.

The idea is that disease doesn’t thrive in an alkaline environment. Whether or not the science fully supports every claim out there, this little routine felt good, simple, and empowering.

pH Testing: A Fun Little Experiment

We picked up a pack of pH test strips on Amazon — $3 for about 300 strips. Super cheap.

Brad would test his pH a few times a day, usually using urine. (Second morning urine gives the best reading, since the first release tends to flush out acids from the day before.) You can use saliva too, but urine gave us a more consistent picture.

It was actually fascinating. Within an hour of eating or drinking something, we could see how his pH changed. Some foods would acidify, others would help him stay in the green. It was a mini science experiment we could do at home — and it helped us feel like we had some control during a time when so much felt out of our hands.

What's a Good pH?

From our own tracking, we aimed to stay near a urine pH of 7.5 to 7.8 — slightly alkaline, but still within a healthy range.

Again, this was just our experience. Everyone’s body is different, and what worked for us may not be right for someone else.

🌿 In our opinion, staying mindful of what you put in your body — and how it affects you — is never a bad thing. Lemon water became a small but mighty part of our daily rhythm, and it still reminds me that healing doesn’t always have to be complicated.

Do what feels right for you. Trust your body. And when in doubt, go back to the basics.

With love,Nicola
